SHEFFIELD WEDNESDAY club doctor Richard Higgins has bowed out after 26 years’ service.

Higgins joined the club in February 1998 and yesterday’s 4-0 FA Cup win over Cardiff City represented his final match with the Owls. Afterwards, he was presented with a club shirt bearing his name and the number 26 that had been signed by staff and players.

Striker Josh Windass, who scored Wednesday’s first goal, wrote on LinkedIn: “Another goal today but, more importantly, a win to send off Dr Richard Higgins. Twenty-six years at one football club. These people behind the scenes at football clubs can be overlooked.

“Thanks for looking after me and my family on and off the pitch. Good luck Doc!”

Higgins will continue as the Football League's Medical Advisor and Lead Sports Physician in the North for the English Institute of Sport.
